‘Wolivo’ [pronounced ‘Woh-lieh-woh’], is the debut album of Kashmiri artist Ali Saffudin.
This album encapsulates an angry Kashmiri voicing his truth, depicting experiences of anger, dissent, spirituality, and reformation that showcase the volatility of living in Kashmir. Using hard-edged alternative sound to trace the juxtapositions between chaos and beauty found at every turn of the valley whilst flowing through Ali's life as an artist living in a state of unrest.

Staying in a place that has faced armed conflict and waves of resistance over 30 years. ‘Wolivo’ tries to encapsulate the feelings of an artist, born and raised in constant turmoil.

Ali uses the poems, language, Kashmir’s elephantine landscape, and the visual imagery inculcated by his ancestry intertwined with every song. For Ali, silence is a means of resistance, especially when several dimensions of his identity are constrained by ideas manufactured by society’s stereotypes.

Adding his own influences ranging from punk music, grunge, heavy metal, folk, and rock - ‘Wolivo’ juxtaposes the chaos and beauty found in the valley by employing a wide sonic spectrum that mimics the region’s paradoxes. The doublespeak in his writing flows between Urdu and Kashmiri while reimagining symbols of the Valley.

Existing in the world’s most militarised zone, with his identity criminalised - ‘Wolivo’ evokes the ownership of a Kashmir from Ali’s perception, one not defined by and bound to generations of persecution.
